Creating a diverse, regional economy.

As eastern NSW’s gateway to some of Australia’s richest food and agricultural regions, Bathurst should aim to be a hub of high value production and manufacturing - supported by vibrant retail and consumer shops, and innovative industries looking to the future.

Empowering Bathurst Businesses

Supporting small and medium-sized businesses is a crucial responsibility of councillors — one that sometimes gets overlooked. With around 3,500 small and medium businesses driving our local economy each year, their growth and success are essential not only to our economic health but also to the vibrancy of our community, from the heart of the CBD to our surrounding villages.

We must prioritise the success of these business operators by implementing capacity-building initiatives, streamlining business processes, and developing programs that help startups and small businesses navigate all levels of government more effectively.

Access to Federal and State Grants

Helping businesses access Federal and State grants is vital, especially in challenging times like the pandemic. Communities that focus on quickly distributing state and federal assistance to local businesses see better economic results. This approach keeps cash circulating locally and helps maintain employment.

Strengthening the "Shop Local" Movement

While Bathurst actively promotes shopping locally, there’s room for enhancement. We propose expanding the ‘buy local gift cards’ initiative, potentially rolling out digital versions that link shoppers with local businesses and offer rewards, creating a frequent shopper membership for independent stores.

Supporting the Shift to Online Sales

Physical retail will always be important, but in today’s digital age, local councils should assist businesses in establishing an online presence. Through tech grants and training sessions, we can help businesses transition to online sales, keeping money within the community while expanding their customer base.

Investing in Workforce Training for the Future

We need to invest in workforce training and placement programs that align with the economic sectors Bathurst aims to grow. This proactive approach will ensure our workforce is prepared for future opportunities.

Improving Government Efficiency

Navigating local government processes—whether for a food truck permit or a development application—can sometimes be unnecessarily complex due to outdated systems and red tape. By reviewing and streamlining these internal processes, we can create a more agile environment for business and development in Bathurst.

Facilitating Local Government Contracts

Local governments contract a wide range of services. We should make it easier for local businesses to discover and secure these opportunities, fostering stronger ties between local enterprises and their government.
